How are rising grocery prices affecting your eating habits?

Yesterday I spent over $400.00 on food and food products. I am in the process of trying a new cookbook (200 low carb slow cooker recipes) and boy have prices gone up, especially for meats, since the last time I went shopping (about a month ago) for bulk foods. I know this is Alaska and things are probably more expensive here than where you are. You tell me? Are you paying much less? How have your eating and shopping habits changed, if any, with the rising costs of groceries? I see why so many Americans eat such poor quality diets. Low quality, processed, starchy, fatty, and sugary foods are indeed much cheaper than fresh fruits, vegetables, and quality meats. It is very hard to choose between paying the bills and buying quality food for your family but this is a choice that many Americans face every month. No wonder obesity and malnutrition are so prevalent in our country. Heck, check out the $16.00 bottle of Cardamom for example, see the receipt if you don't believe me. It was the only one the store carried. I almost put it back but I felt I couldn't give an honest review of a recipe if I was leaving out ingredients and making substitutions. See how much I think of you guys! I would love to hear your comments and solutions to the rising costs groceries.

Hi. I used to live in Eagle River, so I can sympathize with the prices. Here's a tip for buying spices: There is a latino brand of spices called "Badia". They are usually at LEAST 1/2 the price of Spice Islands or McCormick. I would look for them at New Sagaya in Anchorage, or at Fred Meyer in the latino food section. I also buy a lot of the beans and things from this section--they are so much cheaper (at least here in Florida). I miss Eagle River sometimes, and I do remember those trips to Costco....I used to joke and say that Costco should have a sign over the door that says "Do Not Enter Here Unless You Have $500"--too true!
