What is your favorite application for the iphone?


So far I am loving;
FREE! Betty Crocker mobile cookbook. You can type any ingredient into the seachbox and all the recipes that contain that ingredient will show up. Each recipe has a list of ingredients and cooking instructions. The other day I was at the grocery store and saw a can of green Chile was on sale. I typed green Chile into the search box on this application and decided on a great southwestern stew (for your slow cooker and we know how I love my crock pot) out of the several recipes that came up. I was able to see what other ingredients I needed and even get ideas for side dishes! It's great. It also gives nutritional info on each recipe! Get this application, you'll love it!
Free!All Around me. This application utilizes the gps component of your iphone. It will give you a list of the; banks, bars, coffee shops, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, movie theaters, parking, pharmacies, "pubs", restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, theaters, as well as a "nearby" tab that takes you a listing of other notable locations (think schools, sports stadiums, cities (suburbs), zoos, parks, etc) around you. It also has a weather tab that will give you a 3 day weather report. The listings are by no means complete but they are pretty through especially for Alaska when you consider almost no mobile gps or satellite radio service works here.
Free!Sparkpeople. This food & fitness tracker keeps track of your weight (with graph), contains a simple food diary that links with their online site (if you make an entry to your daily intake from your computer via their website, it shows up on your phone too), an exercise tracker, and a water intake tracker. The food listing isn't as complete as I would like but it allows you (on their site) to add your own foods and its nutritional data. You can then save them to your favorites and then they will show up on your iphone version too. I am still wondering if there isn't a better food diary application out there, but for a free one, this isn't bad.
$9.99 iBlogger allows you to blog with photos, tags, categories, links, and location. It is easy to use and very convenient. Those of you that are regular readers have probably noticed the little, "published from my iphone using iblogger"
signature lately, so obviously it does it's job. the only drawback is that it doesn't support photos or videos yet for Blogger but since I was easily able to configure my Blogger account to accept emailed photos and videos from my iphone, it hasn't been an issue. For $10.00 however, you would think they would offer photo and video blogging but no application is perfect.
Free!Pandora Radio is a free music streaming application that allows you to search for artists, songs, albums, and music type. It then makes recommendations and plays songs and stations based on your preferences. You can give songs thumbs up or thumbs down. Presumably, it learns from your ratings and gets better and better at recommending songs and stations that you will enjoy. It is compatible with their web service. If you really like a song or album, there is even the ability to buy it from itunes, bookmark it, and email the station to a friend.
Free!Facebook allows you to keep up to date on your friends latest updates, photos, and chat (I haven't used the chat yet). I love getting updates and posting photos. You can't respond to some requests however. I lost a pillow fight because of this, Ha Ha! But other than that, it is still a pretty good application.
Free!Myspace Mobile allows you to send and receive messages, upload and share photos, read bulletins, post comments, and find friends. You can't see some personalized layouts or hear profile music however. You also can't see when someone last logged on. I like this application but if I am honest, I use Facebook more now. I still have many friends that are only on Myspace so it is nice to be able to comment and post photos that they can see.

21 iPhone Food Apps to Eat Your Heart Out

Sure there are plenty of foodie sites online like YelpYelp, Zeer, Dishola and tons more. But how many have actually merged into the iPhone space, the most portable way to figure out what you want to eat?

Here are 21 food-related iPhone apps, both free and paid, that will let you eat your heart out:

Where (free) – A location-based app that works with Yelp as well as Starbucks. So you can find food and your coffee wherever you are. The app also works with GasBuddy (for the cheapest gas nearby), EventfulEventful, Buddy Beacon, ZipCar, and Quibblo Quizzes.

Yelp (free) – The Yelp app is GPS-enabled and will find you places to eat nearby (amongst other things). The problem with this app is that it lacks Yelp’s best feature – the ability to review.

UrbanSpoon (free) – A fun app if you’re close to a city. It’s not as limited as the LocalEats app (above), but you’re not going to find anything nearby if you’re more than 20 miles from a city. It’s a slot machine application that lets you pick how much you want to spend or what kind of meal you want to eat. You shake the iPhone and it gives you a list of results within the categories you selected.

iFob (free) – This app goes against GPS technology and encourages Wi-fi connections. So when you’re at a restaurant that has wi-fi, you can walk away with a friend? The idea is to connect people that are within close range of each other. So maybe you’ll have an eating partner.

Restaurant Nutrition (free) – The most disturbing of the nutrition fact iPhone apps is this one. It lists the nutrition facts for most popular chain restaurants. You won’t believe how many grams of fat are in a chicken caesar wrap at Chili’s.

iWant (free) – A (possibly better) version of the Where To app (below) that’s free. Like the Where To app, it works easily like the POI navigation on a GPS device. Easy to use, easy to drive with. It has 3.5 stars at the iTunes store with the biggest complaint being that it doesn’t list enough results under some categories.

Nearby (free) – Works like other geo-locating apps, you search for things around you; only this time there will be various types of commentary about a particular spot: photos, notes, reviews and “virtual graffiti”.

YPMobile (free) – When worse comes to worse, hit up the Yellow Pages.

Where To ($2.99) – This is a cool little app that works like the POI (point of interest) function on a regular GPS. It finds your location, you choose a category, and it finds all of the places in that category that are near you. Food & Drink is just one of the 600 categories that you can choose from. It works kind of like a front-end to Google Search, however makes using it while on the road very easy and simple to use. Is it worth the $2.99? Well that’s less than a tank of gas in most places, so sure.

LocalEats ($0.99) – Based on the site wherethelocalseat.com, this app gives you the best 100 restaurants in the top 50 U.S. cities. The interface is extremely easy to use and it mostly avoids chain restaurants. The downside is that it’s only applicable if you’re near or in a big city. Still has 4 out of 5 stars at the app store.

There are also some good Web apps for foodies:

Menus – Offers menus for many fast food restaurants and includes a Google MapsGoogle Maps link so that you can direct yourself to the nearest drive-thru.

TopChef Recipe Finder – Hosted by the Bravo network, this Web app will help you find recipes when you’re grocery shopping or just plain looking for something to make. AOL Recipes and 101Cookbooks are other Web apps like this.

CookBook – So you have all these ingredients in your house but you’re not sure what to make with them. This Web app will let you input ingredients and will try to come up with some recipes that you can make using those ingredients.

Steak Timer – You didn’t think someone would spend the time on this one did you? Yeah this little Web app shows a piece of steak on a timer from raw to well done. I think I’d do the meat thermometer test first though before trusting this app.

GrubOntheGo – A little Web app that has you enter what you’re craving and where you are. Will display local results and the distance (approximately) from your location. A lot like the other iPhone apps but I like the twist of “what you’re craving”.




5 Great Health Applications for Your iPhone
And 1 lousy one

The release this month of Apple's iPhone 3G, the sleeker, faster, cheaper version of the original iPhone, was met with cheers and long lines across the country. But the star that stole the show was the introduction at the same time of the App Store, which features hundreds of downloadable programs—some free, some not—for both the new and old iPhones as well as the iPod Touch.
While video game apps like Texas Hold 'Em and Super Monkey Ball are leading the pack in downloads, the App Store features a number of useful health, nutrition, and fitness programs. U.S.News & World Report tested more than a few of the currently available applications and picked out our five favorites (and a least favorite, too).
Absolute Fitness. By far the most impressive health app we tested, Absolute Fitness is also one of the more expensive at $14.99. But for those wanting a comprehensive, easy-to-use way to keep a food and exercise diary, set target nutrition and weight goals, and track and graph vital health data including cholesterol and intake of calories, saturated fat, and sodium, this app is a bargain. (Food diaries have been proven to be effective tools for weight loss.) Before you get started, the program asks you a series of questions to establish your gender, date of birth, activity level, and whether your goal is to gain or lose weight. The powerful diary section has a wide-ranging database of nutritional information on foods in nearly every category (dairy, meats, snacks, and seafood, just to name a few), and even nutritional facts on specific brand-name products. By entering what you eat at each meal and which exercises you do, you can get the program to calculate calories in minus calories burned, letting you know if you're on the right track to meeting your health and fitness goals.

Quitter. For former smokers who have kicked the habit or are trying to, Quitter offers an extra boost of motivation. The free program is as simple as they come: Just enter the last date on which you smoked, how many cigarettes you used to smoke on average per day, and the cost of a pack. The app will calculate how much moolah you've saved. Thereafter, whenever you open the program, an outsized "Congratulations" appears on the screen, along with a statement about how long you've been smoke free and a meter showing your savings so far. As the months pass, the dollar amount can add up to hundreds or thousands. Congratulations, indeed.

ICE. While it may not be much more useful than a paper card in your wallet, the concept behind ICE, which stands for In Case of Emergency, shows a lot of promise. There are other emergency contact programs at the App Store, but ICE seemed the most comprehensive and the best performer. And for only 99 cents, it's the best value, too. The app lets you enter any allergies you may have to medications, food, or "other" (latex, stinging insects), and comes stocked with a long list of meds to choose from when entering what you take. There's also a section for recording any medical conditions you may have. Emergency contact names and numbers can be added easily from your iPhone's contact list. What's missing? Info on blood type, organ donation, and a way for emergency personnel to override your phone's security PIN, if it has one. Another problem? Since electronic and portable emergency contact programs are so new, emergency personnel—who would need the data if they found you unconscious—may not yet even think to check your iPhone.

Kenkou. The name of this simple, $4.99 program app means "health" in Japanese, and the aptly named app lets users keep track of some important personal health and wellness data. It's particularly useful for people with diabetes. The user can enter her blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight—and date-stamp each entry, enabling her to track trends over time. The program also lets users track how many minutes they exercised, record what foods they ate, and note other relevant details.

iScale. This is another food diary app, but with significantly fewer features than Absolute Fitness. Its simplicity, colorful user interface, and price tag (only $4.99), however, make it worthy of consideration. Each day, the user enters the foods eaten at each meal as well as nutritional and calorie information for each item. The program features an FDA food database with nutritional facts on a wide variety of foods, which is particularly useful for fresh fruits and vegetables and other nonpackaged foods. The program will calculate the total calories you consumed at a particular meal, and it will even keep a shopping list of foods you need to restock. A graphing feature will be added to a soon-to-be available updated version, but it's unclear whether that will cost extra.

Not every program in Apple's new software store is a winner. Our least favorite application in the healthcare and fitness category was Steps. This pedometer program uses the iPhone's built-in accelerometer to measure the number of steps a user takes. Unfortunately, it simply isn't accurate. In testing, it seemed to register only one of every two or three steps we took. It's a worthy idea that could be useful if its accuracy were improved, but at $1.99, save your money for Super Monkey Ball ($9.99).

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Hardware stores and auto parts shops scored a post-holiday run of business this week as Anchorage-area residents stocked up on protective eyewear and masks ahead of a possible eruption of Mount Redoubt.
Monitoring earthquakes underneath the 10,200-foot Redoubt Volcano about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory warned that an eruption was imminent, sending experienced Alaskans shopping for protection against a dusty shower of volcanic ash that could descend on south-central Alaska.
"Every time this happens we do get a run on dust masks and goggles," said Phil Robinson, manager of an Alaska Industrial Hardware store in Anchorage. "That's the two main things for eye and respiratory protection."
[An official with the Alaska Volcano Observatory told FOX News that they were expecting an eruption within days. The level of seismic activity had dipped from Sunday's peak, but the AVO did not feel comfortable lowering the threat level.]

Customer Ron Cowan picked up gear at the store Thursday before heading off to an auto parts store for a spare air filter.
"I'm older now and I'm being a little more proactive than I was the last time," Cowan said.
When another Alaska volcano, Mount Spurr, blew in 1992, he waited too long.
"The shelves were cleared, so I thought I wouldn't wait until the last minute," Cowan said.
Unlike earthquakes, volcanoes often give off warning signs that usually give people time to prepare.
The observatory, a joint program between the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute and the state Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, was formed in response to the 1986 eruption of Mount Augustine.
It has a variety of tools to predict eruptions. As magma moves beneath a volcano before an eruption, it often generates earthquakes, swells the surface of a mountain and increases the gases emitted.
The observatory samples gases, measures earthquake activity with seismometers and watches for deformities in the landscape.
On Nov. 5, geologists noted changed emissions and minor melting near the Redoubt summit and raised the threat level from green to yellow. It jumped to orange — the stage just before eruption — on Sunday in response to a sharp increase in earthquake activity below the volcano.
Alaska's volcanoes are not like Hawaii's. "Most of them don't put out the red river of lava," said the observatory's John Power.
Instead, they typically explode and shoot ash 30,000 to 50,000 feet high — more than nine miles — into the jet stream.
"It's a very abrasive kind of rock fragment," Power said. "It's not the kind of ash that you find at the base of your wood stove."
The particulate has jagged edges and has been used as an industrial abrasive. "They use this to polish all kinds of metals," he said.
Particulate can injure skin, eyes and breathing passages. The young, the elderly and people with respiratory problems are especially susceptible. Put enough ash under a windshield wiper and it will scratch glass.
It's also potentially deadly for anyone flying in a jet. "Think of flying an airliner into a sandblaster," Power said.
Redoubt blew on Dec. 15, 1989, and sent ash 150 miles away into the path of a KLM jet carrying 231 passengers. Its four engines flamed out.
As the crew tried to restart the engines, "smoke" and a strong odor of sulfur filled the cockpit and cabin, according to a USGS account.
The jet dropped more than 2 miles, from 27,900 feet to 13,300 feet, before the crew was able to restart all engines and land the plane safely at Anchorage. The plane required $80 million in repairs.
The observatory's first call after an eruption is now to the Federal Aviation Administration. The observatory's data collection has become far more advanced in 19 years, as has the alert system.
"Pilots are routinely trained to avoid ash and in what to do if they encounter an ash cloud," Power said. "That kind of thing was not routinely done in the 1980s."
The jet stream can carry ash for hundreds of miles. Ash from Kasatochi Volcano in the Aleutians last August blew all the way to Montana and threatened aircraft, Power said.
Particulate is mildly corrosive but can be blocked with masks and filters.
Power advises Alaskans to prepare as they would for a bad snowstorm: Keep flashlights, batteries and several days' worth of food in the house, limit driving and prepare to hunker down if the worst of an ash cloud hits.
Merely going indoors is a defense against ash. The American Red Cross recommends wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants outside, plus goggles and glasses instead of contact lenses. If no dust mask is available, an effective respiratory filter is a damp cloth over nose and mouth.
But potential danger all depends on the wind. Mount Spurr erupted three times in 1992. When it blew that June, only climbers on Mount McKinley — about 150 miles north of Anchorage — were affected, Power said.
An August eruption dumped significant ash on Anchorage and a September blow sent ash about 40 miles north of Anchorage to Wasilla.
Dust mask customer Elizabeth Keating said Thursday that if the volcano erupts, she expects to stay inside. She bought masks for her school-age grandchildren to carry in their backpacks.
"I want to make sure they're carrying these in case they're en route," she said.

No, I'm not gonna blow sunshine up your arse..

I received several responses to my post; Death by Hot Wing. Several people seemed to think that my sole purpose in writing it was to scare people and make people decide against having weight loss surgery. This is certainly not the case. I write this blog as an honest experience of my life post weight loss surgery. I do not shy away from the bad experiences, that wouldn't be fair to the reader.
If you read my post about the hot wings then you will notice that I wrote that I am very grateful that I had my surgery and that I am most grateful that I now have energy and am healthy enough to play with my little girl. My surgeon was exceptional in his honesty and in his follow up care. I now live in Alaska and work in health care and encounter physicians and post ops who have NEVER been educated whatsoever about vitamins, lifestyle changes, etc. It happens, it is scary but it does happen more than you think. The nurse that I mention in that post works with me in a hospital where WLS is preformed and where she is sometimes assigned fresh wls post ops and she is that uneducated about it. My surgeon told us that all of us would test the limits eventually. I sat there in my pre surgical state thinking, "Well I won't! No not me!" And here I am a little over a year and a half later and yes, indeed I have eaten things that I knew I shouldn't. I don't do it regularly or even on purpose (one of my worst dumps was on a protein shake from a gym) but I do. No one is so disciplined or restrictive with their diet that they haven't dumped or had a bad food reaction, at least no one that I have ever encountered that is more than a year post op. I posted this so people can be aware that this surgery does require a lifestyle change. You would be surprised how many people don't realize that. That is why I take the time to post links to my blog posts, to hopefully educate and inspire people to do a little research pre op. It is worth the occasional ridicule if it helps one person. I wish I had the time to reach out to each state individually but unfortunately I do not. This is the simplest way I know for me to reach as many people as possible. I in no way regret my surgery nor my husbands surgery which cured his type 2 diabetes got him off of the tons of meds he was on pre op (his triglycerides were 1300 on meds pre op). But it is not a magic cure all and unfortunately many people don't realize that. I only take the time to do this to encourage and support people to learn more, not just from me but on their own too. It is the readers choice to read my posts or not. to follow the link and read my blogs or not. Even if someone is laughing at my expense..at least it made them think and hopefully will make them realize that this is a serious life altering surgery. If they do that, then I have done what I set out to do. If you have had weight loss surgery and haven't had any problems whatsoever following the lifestyle changes and have never dumped or eaten anything that you shouldn't have (this is also assuming that you are more than a few months post op and past the "honeymoon stage") then you are very lucky for three reasons 1. you were informed and/or researched that this surgery requires a lifestyle change in order to work long term 2. that you took it seriously 3. that you have been successful in making the lifestyle changes. I am happy for you. I just wish the everyone was as dedicated, myself included. We all eventually hear about someones aunt, neighbor, cousin, sisters ex boyfriends teacher, etc who had WLS and gained it all back . I remember when I started to hear that from people, I went out and purchased every book I could on the subject of wls (yes, my reviews of them are on this blog also) and educated myself. I also had, as I mentioned above, a wonderful surgeon. Old habits are hard to break and bad behavior can sneak up on you one lapse at a time, just like weight gain. That is why I write these blogs because I am not perfect and I do lapse and I hope by reading about my mistakes, others won't beat themselves up too much when they lapse themselves and to let them know what can happen when they do so they don't get an ugly or dangerous surprise like I did with the torte. Please keep in mind that every surgeons program is different (if they even have a follow up program) and so are the recommendations. No one and I stand by this statement 100% will be able to live 100% by the plan for the rest of your life. the trick is ;when you fall of the wagon, get back up dust yourself off and get right back on. Don't lay there letting the wagon drag you down the hill behind it! In other words, realize you are not perfect, no one is. Accept your lapse, try to learn from it and get back on track. Sounds easy right, but it can be very hard for some of us. I was the queen of, well I already blew my diet so I might as well eat -----. pre op. This was the biggest lifestyle change for me. Everyone is different (kinda like those post op recommendations) and different people will struggle with different things post op but eventually we will all struggle with something. I hope by posting my struggles and being blunt and honest about them, I help others. I hope my blog gives you some information you might not have found otherwise that helps you on your weigh loss journey. That is the reason I write it, and to post photos on my daughter (can't help it, I love her to bits).
I try to be honest in my post op experience not to scare people away from the surgery but to let people know, as I have said repeatedly, that this surgery requires a lifestyle change.
Say that you are only a few months post op and you are just positive that you will never ever eat something off the plan and therefore will never dump or have a bad reaction. I promise you, and this is not in any way intended to make you feel bad, that at some point you will get sick or have a bad reaction to something you eat post op. Again, no one can live 100% by the plan for the rest of their post op life. If we were that disciplined, most of us wouldn't have needed this surgery in the first place, myself included. I write these posts and open myself up to critics and ridicule hoping that even if only one person reads them that has struggled post op, that is having difficulties living by the plan, they can see that they are not alone. The most important thing I hope that pre ops get from my posts is the fact that this surgery isn't a magic cure, that it requires a lifestyle change. I am not going to write only the positive or disappear from the boards and blogs when things aren't perfect post op. That isn't fair to the people that read them, and very misleading. Not every ones life is all sunshine and roses and neither will every ones post op experience be 100% Rosy either. It is only fair to present the good the bad and the ugly. Again, having said all of that, I am still very glad that I have had my surgery and that my husband had it as well. I am 15 pounds from goal and, NO, I don't live 100% by the plan all of the time. I am very honest about this so hopefully others can learn. It is easy when you are freshly post op and the weight is falling off almost regardless of what you are doing (the honeymoon phase) to be super excited and to think that this surgery is the end all be all. I knew different because I worked in health care and had seen some complications first hand and because I did my research. (not to mention that I had a wonderful surgeon who has a wonderful follow up plan and even helped me to continue to be able to breastfeed post op)
I also had two strictures (one within the first 2 weeks post op)and my husband had one within the first month post op so that reinforced the seriousness of this surgery. Complications are always possible and so is the possibility of failure and regain. To pretend that isn't true is to lie to yourself. I believe it actually helps me to remember on a daily basis that this surgery has given me a tool, if I choose to use it properly, then it can serve me well, if I choose not to, then it will surely fail me. With ever lapse that I have, I remind myself all that I have gone through (including the 6 years I fought to get this surgery approved) and how far I have come and that helps me to get right back on track. That is the most important thing I have learned post op.

Let me be the first to say that I don't agree with many of her beliefs but I am just thrilled that we have reached a day and time when REPUBLICANS!!! would pick a WOMAN to be in a position to be 2nd in line to the president. Was it a big surprise when Hillary Clinton ran for president on the Democratic ticket? only sort of. I never thought I would see a Republican female get this nomination. At least not this election. I am not endorsing her or McCain by any means, I am just happy as a woman and as a mother, that we have come this far in our country. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that women couldn't even vote here! See the chart below and then some stories about Sarah Palin.

In two short years, Sarah Palin moved from small-town mayor with a taste for mooseburgers to the governor's office and now — making history — to John McCain's side as the first female running mate on a Republican presidential ticket.

She has more experience catching fish than dealing with foreign policy or national affairs.

Talk about a rocketing ascent.

In turning to her, McCain picked an independent figure in his own mold, one who has taken on Alaska's powerful oil industry and, at age 44, is three years younger than Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and a generation younger than McCain, 72.

Palin's selection was a jaw-dropper, as McCain passed over many other better known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months. "Holy cow," said her father, Chuck Heath, who got word something was up while driving to his remote hunting camp.

Palin had been in the running-mate field but as a distinct long shot.

She brings a strong anti-abortion stance to the ticket and opposes gay marriage — constitutionally banned in Alaska before her time — but exercised a veto that essentially granted benefits to gay state employees and their partners.

"She knows where she comes from, and she knows who she works for," McCain said in introducing her to an Ohio rally. "She stands up for what's right, and she doesn't let anyone tell her to sit down." He said: "She's exactly who I need."

Said Palin: "I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not why the ship is built."

Democrats seized on the gaping experience gap and said McCain now has no business questioning the seasoning of their nominee. Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said McCain was taking a "roll of the dice" and declared that Palin's "lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling."

Palin lives in Wasilla, a town of 6,500 about 30 miles north of Anchorage, with her husband, Todd, a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who won the 2007 Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. He is part Yup'ik Eskimo. The two have spent summers fishing commercially for salmon, an enterprise that once left her with broken fingers aboard their boat.

Typically seen walking the Capitol halls in black or red power suits while reading text messages on Blackberry screens in each hand, Palin made a recent appearance in fashion magazine Vogue.

"At first they had me in a bunch of furs," she said of the photo shoot. "Yeah, I have furs on my wall, but I don't wear furs. I had to show them my bunny boots and my North Face clothing."

Palin's clean-hands reputation has come into question with an investigation recently launched by a legislative panel into whether she dismissed Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper. Trooper Mike Wooten went through a messy divorce from Palin's sister.

The governor denied orchestrating the dozens of telephone calls made by her husband and members of her administration to Wooten's bosses. She says she welcomes the investigation: "Hold me accountable."

Palin, who led the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at her high school, could help McCain's standing with social conservatives who have been skeptical of him.

"It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law and founder of the legal group Liberty Counsel, who has sought to coalesce evangelicals around McCain. "This will absolutely energize McCain's campaign and energize conservatives."

Palin is "a woman of faith who has a strong position on life, a consistent opinion on judges," Staver said. "She's the complete package."

Four months into her most recent pregnancy, Palin learned the child would have Down syndrome, and she said she never had any doubts about whether she would have the baby.

"We understand that every innocent life has wonderful potential," Palin told AP earlier this year in describing what she and her husband had confronted. Trig, her fifth child, was born in April.

Alaska's first female governor arrived at the Capitol in 2006 on an ethics reform platform after defeating two former governors in the primary and general elections.

In the primary, Palin defeated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski, who also had 22 years of experience in the U.S. Senate.

Her task didn't seem any easier in the general election, but she handily beat Tony Knowles, a popular Democrat who had served two earlier terms as governor.

During her first year in office, Palin moved away from the powerful old guard of the state Republican Party and has refused to kowtow to the powerful oil industry, instead presiding over a tax increase on oil company profits that now has the state's treasury swelling.

But she is a proponent of petroleum development, in tune with McCain, although the two disagree on drilling in Alaska's protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She favors drilling there; he opposes it.

The governor also opposed designating polar bears as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, fearing that step would get in the way of a proposed natural gas pipeline tapping the North Slope's vast reserves.

Before becoming governor, her political experience consisted of terms as Wasilla's mayor and councilwoman and a stint as head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Her parents Chuck and Sally were trying to reach the abandoned gold mine that serves as their hunting camp when their son-in-law called them Thursday to tell them to tune in to the radio when they got there. A flooded creek turned them around for home.

"I should have put two and two together," her dad said. "I'd rather go moose hunting than be involved with politics."

But if she's down-home, she's also politically savvy.

"Sarah Palin for her entire political career has been underestimated," said Paulette Simpson of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women. "She's tough, she's tenacious. I believe that she does have what it takes to get out there. Again, her ability to connect with voters and make a case is very, very, very strong."

Palin's confrontations with the state GOP began when Murkowski named her chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. There, Palin exposed current Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich, who was also on the commission, for ethical violations.

In 2005, Palin co-filed an ethics complaint against Murkowski's longtime aide and then attorney general, Gregg Renkes, for having a financial interest in a company that stood to gain from an international trade deal he was helping craft.

The Palins' five children are Track, 19; Bristol 17; Willow 14; Piper, 7, and baby Trig.

Track enlisted in the Army in 2007 on the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and has been assigned to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks.

Palin was born Feb. 11, 1964, in Idaho, but her parents moved to Alaska shortly after her birth to teach. She received a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Buzz up!John McCain has chosen his running mate: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

The 44-year-old -- who was elected governor just two years ago after serving as mayor of Wasilla (pop. 6,715) -- will be the first woman nominated by the Republican Party to run on a national ticket.

"She's exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second," McCain, who turned 72-years-old Friday, said at a rally attended by 15,000 flag-waving supporters at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Palin reached out to Hillary Clinton's supporters in her remarks.

"It was rightly noted in Denver this week that Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America," she said. "But it turns out the women of America aren't finished yet, and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all."

Palin is the mother of five children, the youngest of whom was born in April and has Down syndrome. Both Palin and McCain both have children in the military.

She is a pro-gun rights social conservative who opposes abortion and gay marriage.

"Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president," the McCain campaign said in a statement. "[She] has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today."

Born in Idaho and a graduate of the University of Idaho, Palin is the first female governor of Alaska and its youngest. She was also the runner-up in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant.

Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden said in a statement that McCain's pick "is yet another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics."

The Obama campaign, meanwhile, issued a sharper critique: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it’s just more of the same."

Palin's parents were advised to "listen to the radio" by her husband, Tim, they told CBS News.

Chuck and Sally Heath described the choice as "a wonderful surprise."

Said Sally, "I am shocked!"

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman were all considered to be on McCain's short list.

I will be the first to admit that the story is pretty thin and the illustrations aren't that great but this is the first book that I have seen that is written for small children (besides Sesame Streets Happy Healthy Monsters series) about diet and exercise.

This is almost too embarrassing to post but my thought is, if it prevents this from happening to someone else, then it is worth it.
So I have been very stressed lately. Some of you know more of it than others, in brief; I am changing jobs (hours I will be working, hospital that I will be working at, and going into the one area of nursing that I have no experience in what so ever)
in school (trying to meet the January deadline which means I will be trying to take 14 credit hours while working full time, caring for Lilith, and trying to fulfill all of the testing, interviews, etc for my possible career change), going through the process of changing my whole career which requires all sorts of hoop jumping and testing (see above), and trying to find a daycare that I trust enough to enroll Lilith in. I was an emotional eater before this surgery and as much as this surgery fixes your stomach, it does nothing to fix your head. I have been dealing with this since the surgery with mostly success but lately I have been having a hard time and have been really having to remind myself not to give in. (you aren't really hungry, you are just stressed, eating this won't make you feel any better, in fact it will make you feel worse, etc etc.) Well, yesterday I did something REALLY STUPID and very dangerous. I had a slice of a torte. Did I know that it was not the right thing to do, yes. Did that stop me, unfortunately, no it didn't. I am unfortunately one of those post ops that can get away with a little sugar and not dump, usually. I can push my limits up to the 15mgs and sometimes even beyond with no ill effects. This makes me sad as I don't miss the breads or fats at all but I am still tempted by sugar. If I dumped on it, I would avoid it. I will be avoiding any type of torte like anything from now on however. I shouldn't have let the dumb thing in the house in the first place, I knew that was stupid right from the start but I didn't stop myself. Lilith fortunately doesn't like most sweets (except chocolate) and I think this is because she really hasn't grown up with them, thanks to the surgery, but I stupidly justified the 1/12 slice of poison thinking I could share it with her. She wanted nothing to do with it. So guess who ate it the following morning for breakfast? um hum. on an empty stomach none the less. I told you the whole thing was very stupid. Well, all I can say is that I am VERY LUCKY. I had fed Lilith first and put the television on Sprout so she could watch Sesame street while I ate the torte. I justified it again because it was such a small slice, etc etc. It wasn't even a flavor I would normally have chosen for myself (lemon) but I ate it anyway. I started to feel strange with in 5 minutes of eating it. I got very very sleepy and thought, hey maybe I am just really tired. We had stayed up late the night before going to see "The Dark Knight" so the warning bells didn't go off like they should have. I shut the gate going into the dining room and kitchen area and got a body pillow and lay down next to Lilith thinking that I would just rest a little. That is the last thing I remember. I vaguely remember being in pain (cramping and a pounding headache)but it was almost like it was part of some weird dream. I woke up 3 hours later realizing that Lilith had pulled up my night gown and was saying, "Lilith boobie. Boobie Mama. Lilith hungry, Mama". I was laying there with my gown almost completely over my head. I might as well have been laying there with a syringe sticking out of my arm. Seriously that is how horrible I felt. I was dead to the world for 3 hours from what I realize now as a hyperglycemic reaction. Just like a diabetic that eats too much sugar and can go into a coma or a coma like state, that is what I had done to myself with my sugar ingestion. I am super fortunate that I have toddler proofed our home like I have. I am so grateful that nothing bad happened to Lilith in those three hours. I am super grateful that I actually woke up at all. I won't joke about our home being toddler jail anymore. I can't say what she would have gotten into if the kitchen, bathroom, our bedroom, etc had been accessible during that time. I sure wouldn't have been available to help her if she had hurt herself. Again, would it have been anymore dangerous if I had been ingesting any other potentially impairing type of drug or substance? I think not. I know some of you will want to argue with me that a slice of cake is a lot different than shooting up some heroin or getting drunk while trying to care for your child but after this surgery, is it really? We don't know how we will react to sugar. We could be in the bathroom for hours, or over the sink, or unconscious like I was, but the result is almost the same in all three scenarios, we are unavailable to watch or care for anyone but ourselves (in the last example we aren't even able to do that, I should have realized what was happening to me and been very concerned but I wasn't even thinking clearly enough to do that). If that doesn't sound dangerous, then I don't know what does. It also epitomises the behavior of an addict. I sat up disorientated and had to immediately go to the bathroom to dump. Lovely, I know but that is the ugly reality of it. Just like the heroin addict or alcoholic who
vomits on themselves after taking a hit or a drink, or soiling themselves, or worse.
In my eyes there is no difference. I was then unavailable to Lilith as I sat in the bathroom with her watching me from the bathroom gate (she pushed the bathroom door open and I was in no position to stop her) asking, "mama okay?" over and over again. I could tell she was scared and that only made it worse as I tried to reassure her while trying not to moan from the cramps. Yes, I warned you this was an embarrassing post but I want people to realize just how seriously you are effected by eating sugar after this surgery. After all of that and a quick shower, I finally lay down with Lilith and breastfeed her to sleep for her nap. I then cleaned up the toys she had strewn all over her room and the living room. That is how out of it I was, I didn't even hear her doing this. What if she had been older and had come home from school or come in from another room and found me passed out an unresponsive how traumatising would that have been to a young child? What a therapy inducing memory that would be? I am so ashamed that I let a stupid piece of cake jeopardize my daughters safety and my health.
I looked up the torte online and found out that 1 serving 1/12 of the thing (it was pre-sliced) had 31 grams of sugar. Talk about stupid, I would never have eaten it knowing that but ignorance is bliss or at least a 3 hour coma. Don't do this to yourself. Take the warning about not consuming too much sugar SERIOUSLY! It frightens me to think of all of the horrible things that could have happened to myself and to Lilith. My husband wasn't due home for 7 hours. I am so grateful that I woke up at all.

Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight loss


I purchased this book about 5 years ago and loved it so much that I bought copies for a few of my friends. It can really open your eyes as to wasted calories in your everyday eating. One of the pages that sticks out in my mind was one that showed you could have a whole LOAF of bread with jam for the calories in one sweet roll! It is a very visual book so the impact is very profound sometimes, especially when you see a photo showing a whole loaf of bread with jam next to a tiny sweet roll! There are many other profound examples (4 ears of corn on the cob equallying the same calories as a medium order of french fries). I think it is a great book just for the photo pages alone.

We won't be going to this park again



These photos were taken at Arctic Benson Park. It appears to be a memorial to a homeless woman that died there. Why do I presume she was homeless? Well because of the items left at the shrine, a coat tied to the cross, food, clothing, liquor, etc. Very strange items for a shrine, at least I thought. We had driven by this park a few times and the playground is always deserted. Well, now I know why....the surrounding forest area of the park has nice picnic tables scattered through it, these are the local hang out for the homeless. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the homeless, even seeing this as we actually drove into the park, we still stopped to let Lilith play. I did start to feel uncomfortable after noticing the shrine pictured above. Then one of the women hanging out in the tarp town that occupies one area of the park started yelling out to us that there was a much better park further down the road. Husband was determined not to leave as it is a public park, etc, etc but I finally, after the second time the woman yelled to us about the "better" park, convinced him to leave. We drove to the "better" park which was totally packed. The play equipment wasn't any better but the park did have tennis and basketball courts. Now I could say that this park was so full that people were parking across the street because of the basketball and tennis courts but um, I doubt it.

Some of the things they have choosen to include are a little strange and they have ommitted a few that I use quite a bit personally, but it is still a good concept. It is suppose to reduce your, google, ask.com, yahoo search time although those are all there too. Go figure!

Is Big Brother getting under your skin?




Working in health care I had heard about this before. In many health care institutions today, including the one I work for, everything already has a bar code, the patient, every employee including myself, the medications, all of the equipment, etc. For a simple finger stick the nurse must first scan her own bar code, then the patients bar code, then the glucometer strips bar code, then preform the test, and if the result is out of normal range, you have to scan a bar code for whatever action you are taking (retesting, ordering a laboratory draw, etc.) This prevents errors but in many cases it also tacks you the healthcare provider, not just the patient. For example, the last hospital I worked at had the same system. One night a nurse we were working with started to feel faint, another nurse scanned her own bar code to get into the glucometer, then scanned the "emergency" bar code on the glucometer itself to allow her to preform a test without charging a patients account or reporting an erroneous result to pharmacy or lab on a patient (yes these glucometers download the result of every test to pharmacy and lab so they can "double check" to See if the proper insulin was given/ follow up lab test ordered, etc.) so even though she took every precaution possible we all thought possible in this emergency situation, she was later written up (they traced her code) for running an unauthorized blood sugar test on our coworker (whose blood sugar turned out to be 39 and who ended up going to our ED after that result!). We have temporal themometers that will tell a patients temperature with a swipe over a patients forehead, beds that weigh patients, id badges that allow us to walk by a door and have it automatically unlock for us and also that allow our location to be monitored anywhere in the hospital (yes, including the restroom! One charge nurse that I worked under use to think it was big fun to page or call her coworkers when the monitors showed they were in the bathroom on slow nights!) So does this technology reduce errors and save lives? Of course it does. Does it mean that we should open ourselves up to the possibility that having your medical records implanted in your body is the next logical step? I am not so sure. Would it be convenient for health care workers? probably. Would it save lives, probably, but at what cost? I know medical alert bracelets save many lives but they still leave so many unanswered questions. Imagine with a scan of your arm an ER physician would be able to down load your last ekg, x-ray, medication list, vaccination record, surgical history, advance directives, etc. For a patient that is found unresponsive or presents confusion, I can see how this would be very useful. I also can see how it would help when there are language issues. But even with all of the possible benefits, it seems a little like big brother is watching me a little too closely for comfort as it is and having him under my skin, still makes me very uncomfortable. It also seems like this is just opening Pandora's box to all sorts of interesting types of fraud, monitoring, and unnecessary risks.

Will Security Problems Quash IPO Plans for Controversial Company?

The VeriChip can be hacked! This revelation along with other worrisome details could put a crimp in VeriChip Corporation's planned initial public offering (IPO) of its common stock, say Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre.

The anti-RFID activists and authors of "Spychips: How Major Corporations and Government Plan to Track Your Every Move with RFID" make no bones about their objection to VeriChip's plans to inject glass encapsulated RFID tags into people. But now they've discovered information that could call VeriChip's entire business model into question.

"If you look at the VeriChip purely from the business angle, it's a ridiculously flawed product," says McIntyre. She notes that security researcher Jonathan Westhues has shown how easy it is to clone a VeriChip implanted in a person's arm and program a new chip with the same number.

Westhues, known for his prior work cloning RFID-based proximity cards, has posted his VeriChip cloning demo online at http://cq.cx/verichip.pl.

The VeriChip "is not good for anything," says Westhues, has absolutely no security and "solves a number of different non-problems badly."

The chip's security issues may spell trouble for those who have had one of the microchips embedded in their flesh. These include eighteen employees in the Mexican Attorney General's office who use an implanted chip to enter a sensitive records room, and a handful bar patrons in Europe who use the injected chips to pay for drinks. "What are these people going to do now that their chips can be cloned?" says McIntyre. "Wear tinfoil shirts or keep everyone at arm's length?"

Albrecht quips, "A man with a chip in his arm may soon find himself wondering whether that cute gal on the next bar stool likes his smile or wants to clone his VeriChip. It gives new meaning to the burning question, 'Does she want my number?'"

But the VeriChip's problems don't stop there, says McInytre, who is also a former bank examiner and financial writer. She has carefully analyzed the company's SEC registration statement and associated chipping information and discovered serious flaws. It turns out the company's own literature indicates that chipped patients cannot undergo an MRI if they're unconscious. What's more, the company admits that critical medical information linked to the chip could be unavailable in a real emergency. "These issues call VeriChip's promotional campaigns and business plan into question," McIntyre says.

The instructions provided to medical personnel warn that chipped patients should not undergo an MRI unless they are fully alert and able to communicate any "unusual sensations or problems," like movement or heating of the implant. This conflicts with the company's efforts to promote the device to people who cannot speak for themselves, such as Alzheimer's patients, those with dementia, the mentally disabled, and people who are concerned about entering an emergency room unconscious.

"The irony is that implantees will have to wear a Medic Alert bracelet or bear some obvious marking so they aren't mistakenly put in an MRI machine," Albrecht says.

Chipped patients might also have to wear a Medic Alert bracelet as a back-up in case the VeriChip database containing their critical medical information is unavailable. The fine print on the back of the VeriChip Patient Registration Form warns implantees that "the Company does not warrant...that the website will be available at any particular time," and physicians are told the product might not function in places where there are ambient radio transmissions--like ambulances. In addition, patients are required to waive any claims related to the product's "merchantability and fitness." The waiver paragraph as it appears on the form is reprinted below:

"Patient...is fully aware of any risks, complications, risks of loss, damage of any nature, and injury that may be associated with this registration. Patient waives all claims and releases any liability arising from this registration and acknowledges that no warranties of any kind have been made or will be made with respect to this registration. ALL WARRANTIES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, HOWEVER ARISING, WHETHER BY OPERATION OF LAW OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MECHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE EXCLUDED AND WAIVED. "For a life or death medical device, that's unbelievable," says McIntyre. "I wouldn't buy toilet paper that required that kind of a disclaimer, never mind a product that's supposed to serve as a lifeline in an emergency."

McIntyre contacted the VeriChip Corporation for comments on these issues and was initially promised a response. When the company failed to get to get back to her, McIntyre followed up and was told that the employee had been instructed not to answer her questions.

Since U.S. regulators approved them for medical use last year, implantable identification devices from VeriChip have turned up in some interesting places.

VeriChip is a subsidiary of a Palm Beach, Fla., company called Applied Digital, which also makes implantable chips for tracking livestock and identifying lost pets. All are based on technology called radio frequency identification, or RFID.

The technology is commonly used in quick-pay toll systems and building access cards. It's also being used by Wal-Mart and other major retailers to monitor inventory and deter theft.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared VeriChip for medical use in October. The company is targeting patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other conditions requiring complex treatment.

Harvard's Halamka, a practicing emergency room physician, said the chips may also be useful for speeding care in emergency situations in which patients are often unconscious or nonresponsive. The technology could also help prevent errors in treating and administering medication to patients, he said.

"I'm not endorsing the product, yes or no," Halamka said. "I'm evaluating the product. So far there've been no problems."

Halamka said he has no financial relationship with VeriChip or its parent company.

Others who've had the devices implanted include Mexico's attorney general and some of his staff. A nightclub in Spain beat the one in Scotland; it's been offering chip implants since last April. At last count, in July, VeriChip had sold about 7,000 of the devices; about 1,000 of those have been inserted in humans, the company reported.

The practice has drawn criticism, however. Privacy advocates worry the technology would make it easier for the government to spy on its citizens and for marketers to identify customers and bombard them with sale pitches. Others object at a gut level, equating human RFID chips with the "mark of the beast," a demonic symbol described in the Bible.

Identity Badge Worn Under Skin Approved for Use in Health Care

The Food and Drug Administration has cleared the way for a Florida company to market implantable chips that would provide easy access to individual medical records.

The approval, which the company announced yesterday, is expected to bring to public attention a simmering debate over a technology that has evoked Orwellian overtones for privacy advocates and fueled fears of widespread tracking of people with implanted radio frequency tags, even though that ability does not yet exist.

Applied Digital Solutions, based in Delray Beach, Fla., said that its devices, which it calls VeriChips, could save lives and limit injuries from errors in medical treatment. And it expressed hope that such medical uses would accelerate the acceptance of under-the-skin ID chips as security and access-control devices.

Scott R. Silverman, chairman and chief executive of Applied Digital, said the F.D.A.'s approval should help the company overcome "the creepy factor" of implanted tags and the suspicion it has stirred.

"We believe there are far fewer people resisting this today," Mr. Silverman said. But it is far from clear whether implanted identification tags can overcome opposition from those who fear new levels of personal surveillance and from some fundamentalist religious groups who contend that the tags may be the "mark of the beast" referred to in the Book of Revelation.

In Applied Digital's vision, patients implanted with the chips could receive more effective care because doctors, other emergency-room personnel and ambulance crews equipped with Applied's handheld radio scanners would be able to read a unique 16-digit number on the chip.

The chip does not contain any records, but with the number, the care provider would be able to retrieve medical information about blood type, drug histories and other critical data stored in computers. The records could be easily updated.

Tiny radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags similar to VeriChip have been embedded in livestock and pets in the millions in recent years as a more secure form of identification than external tags. But no device maker has yet been able to create a market for human implantable tags like VeriChip, which are the size of a grain of rice and are inserted under the skin of the arm or hand with a syringe.

Applied Digital's distributors overseas have achieved some highly publicized, if limited successes. This summer, Rafael Macedo de la Concha, Mexico's attorney general, announced that he and scores of his subordinates had received implanted chips that control access to a secure room and documents considered vital in Mexico's struggle with drug cartels.

Also, Solusat, the sole distributor of VeriChip in Mexico, says about 1,000 people have received the chip implants to link to their medical records. "You can have all the benefits of radio identification," a Solusat executive, Antonio Aceves, said, "but now it is inside your body."

In March, the Baja Beach Club in Barcelona began offering VeriChips to regular patrons who wanted to dispense with traditional identification and credit cards. About 50 "V.I.P.'s" have received the chip so far, according to a spokesman, which allows them to link their identities to a payment system. The program has been expanded to a club in Rotterdam also owned by Baja, and about 35 people there have signed up for the implants, the company said.

VeriChip announced last week that it had signed a distribution agreement with a British company, Surge IT Solutions, which it said intended to use the technology to control access to government facilities. And Antonia Giorgio Antonucci, an Italian doctor, is leading a study using VeriChip at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome.

"We want to see if the doctors think the device is practical or not," Dr. Antonucci said.

Applied Digital has been free to sell VeriChip in the United States for nonmedical applications, but lack of acceptance of the technology made F.D.A. approval for medical uses a high priority.

"I've believed all along that the medical application was the best, followed by security and financial applications," Mr. Silverman said.

Still, the science-fiction specter of a nation of drones tagged with sub-dermal bar codes may be a difficult image for the company to overcome in selling its technology.

Online conspiracy theorists, for example, often attach abilities to the technology that do not exist, like the ability to track individuals via satellite.

But real privacy concerns have emerged. "At the point you place the chip beneath the skin, you're saying you will not have the ability to remove the ID tracking device," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest advocacy group in Washington. "I think, increasingly, if this takes off - and it's still not clear that it will - the real social debate begins around prisoners and parolees, and perhaps even visitors to the U.S. That's where the interest in being able to identify and track people is."

Indeed, the debate over civil liberties and privacy has made discussing any practical benefits of a technology like VeriChip harder.

"The fact that we're engaged in such a deep, fundamental privacy debate really does complicate the prospect for this kind of technology," said Clyde Wayne Crews Jr., director of technology studies at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a regulatory research group in Washington. "We haven't even sorted out the appropriateness of a RFID tag that goes on a pallet of tomatoes," Mr. Crews said, "much less one that can go under a person's skin."

Applied Digital has tried to counter such concerns by arguing that the implantation of chips is voluntary and the only records linked to a VeriChip will be those authorized by the person with the chip.

But critics say that if the technology gains a foothold, employers, government authorities and others with power over individuals could dictate how it is used. For instance, if chips were to replace dog tags as military identification, the decision would not be up to the discretion of individual soldiers.

The evolution of radio identification technology also concerns some critics. Passive tags like VeriChip do not broadcast radio waves and cannot now be used to track a person's movements. And current scanners cannot read the passive chip from more than a few feet away. But design advances or the addition of a separate power source for the chip could expand those ranges and make tracking possible.

Mr. Silverman has said that the current chip could help managers of high-security installations like nuclear power plants locate people in the building because scanners in doorways should be able to track who enters and leaves a room.

Applied Digital has VeriChip distribution agreements with companies in several states, but those have been largely dormant. It said it hoped to find big medical distribution companies to market the chip to doctors' offices, specialty clinics and emergency rooms.

Dr. Richard Seeley, Applied Digital's medical adviser, said the company would concentrate on winning acceptance of the chip among patients with complex problems like diabetes, which require them to see many doctors, and those with disorders like Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Seeley said the company was also talking to large orthopedics companies to demonstrate the value of linking the chip to medical devices like hip and knee implants.

Mr. Silverman said that surveys had shown that 14 percent to 22 percent of people would consider having the implant, but more than 80 percent of those surveyed said they would consider having the implant if the question was framed to show a medical benefit from the chip.

Applied Digital, which has been losing money for years, cautioned yesterday that it did not expect substantial revenue or profit from VeriChip anytime soon. But investors were optimistic enough about the F.D.A. news to send the company's shares up 68 percent, to close at $3.57 yesterday. Shares of Digital Angel, a subsidiary of Applied Digital that makes animal tags and manufactures the VeriChip, rose nearly 29 percent, to $3.49.

WASHINGTON - Medical milestone or privacy invasion? A tiny computer chip approved Wednesday for implantation in a patient’s arm can speed vital information about a patient’s medical history to doctors and hospitals. But critics warn that it could open new ways to imperil the confidentiality of medical records.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that Applied Digital Solutions of Delray Beach, Fla., could market the VeriChip, an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, for medical purposes.

With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches. Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over it.

Think UPC code. The identifier, emblazoned on a food item, brings up its name and price on the cashier’s screen.

Chip's dual uses raise alarm
The VeriChip itself contains no medical records, just codes that can be scanned, and revealed, in a doctor’s office or hospital. With that code, the health providers can unlock that portion of a secure database that holds that person’s medical information, including allergies and prior treatment. The electronic database, not the chip, would be updated with each medical visit.

The microchips have already been implanted in 1 million pets. But the chip’s possible dual use for tracking people’s movements — as well as speeding delivery of their medical information to emergency rooms — has raised alarm.

“If privacy protections aren’t built in at the outset, there could be harmful consequences for patients,” said Emily Stewart, a policy analyst at the Health Privacy Project.

To protect patient privacy, the devices should reveal only vital medical information, like blood type and allergic reactions, needed for health care workers to do their jobs, Stewart said.

An information technology guru at Detroit Medical Center, however, sees the benefits of the devices and will lobby for his center’s inclusion in a VeriChip pilot program.

“One of the big problems in health care has been the medical records situation. So much of it is still on paper,” said David Ellis, the center’s chief futurist and co-founder of the Michigan Electronic Medical Records Initiative.

'Part of the future of medicine'
As “medically mobile” patients visit specialists for care, their records fragment on computer systems that don’t talk to each other.

“It’s part of the future of medicine to have these kinds of technologies that make life simpler for the patient,” Ellis said. Pushing for the strongest encryption algorithms to ensure hackers can’t nab medical data as information transfers from chip to reader to secure database, will help address privacy concerns, he said.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday announced $139 million in grants to help make real President Bush’s push for electronic health records for most Americans within a decade.

William A. Pierce, an HHS spokesman, could not say whether VeriChip and its accompanying secure database of medical records fit within that initiative.

“Exactly what those technologies are is still to be sorted out,” Pierce said. “It all has to respect and comport with the privacy rules.”

Applied Digital gave away scanners to a few hundred animal shelters and veterinary clinics when it first entered the pet market 15 years ago. Now, 50,000 such scanners have been sold.

To kickstart the chip’s use among humans, Applied Digital will provide $650 scanners for free at 200 of the nation’s trauma centers.

Implantation costs $150 to $200
In pets, installing the chip runs about $50. For humans, the chip implantation cost would be $150 to $200, said Angela Fulcher, an Applied Digital spokeswoman.

Fulcher could not say whether the cost of data storage and encrypted transmission of medical information would be passed to providers.

Because the VeriChip is invisible, it’s also unclear how health care workers would know which unconscious patients to scan. Company officials say if the chip use becomes routine, scanning triceps for hidden chips would become second nature at hospitals.

Ultimately, the company hopes patients who suffer from such ailments as diabetes and Alzheimer’s or who undergo complex treatments, like chemotherapy, would have chips implanted. If the procedure proves as popular for use in humans as in pets, that could mean up to 1 million chips implanted in people. So far, just 1,000 people across the globe have had the devices implanted, very few of them in the United States.

The company’s chief executive officer, Scott R. Silverman, is one of a half dozen executives who had chips implanted. Silverman said chips implanted for medical uses could also be used for security purposes, like tracking employee movement through nuclear power plants.

Such security uses are rare in the United States.

Meanwhile, the chip has been used for pure whimsy: Club hoppers in Barcelona, Spain, now use the microchip to enter a VIP area and, through links to a different database, speed payment much like a smartcard.

Microchip for people may cause cancer
Company didn't tell public of decade-old studies tying device to rat tumors

When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved implanting microchips in humans, the manufacturer said it would save lives, letting doctors scan the tiny transponders to access patients’ medical records almost instantly. The FDA found “reasonable assurance” the device was safe, and a sub-agency even called it one of 2005’s top “innovative technologies.”

But neither the company nor the regulators publicly mentioned this: A series of veterinary and toxicology studies, dating to the mid-1990s, stated that chip implants had “induced” malignant tumors in some lab mice and rats.

“The transponders were the cause of the tumors,” said Keith Johnson, a retired toxicologic pathologist, explaining in a phone interview the findings of a 1996 study he led at the Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich.

Leading cancer specialists reviewed the research for The Associated Press and, while cautioning that animal test results do not necessarily apply to humans, said the findings troubled them. Some said they would not allow family members to receive implants, and all urged further research before the glass-encased transponders are widely implanted in people.

To date, about 2,000 of the so-called radio frequency identification, or RFID, devices have been implanted in humans worldwide, according to VeriChip Corp. The company, which sees a target market of 45 million Americans for its medical monitoring chips, insists the devices are safe, as does its parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, of Delray Beach, Fla.

“We stand by our implantable products which have been approved by the FDA and/or other U.S. regulatory authorities,” Scott Silverman, VeriChip Corp. chairman and chief executive officer, said in a written response to AP questions.

The company was “not aware of any studies that have resulted in malignant tumors in laboratory rats, mice and certainly not dogs or cats,” but he added that millions of domestic pets have been implanted with microchips, without reports of significant problems.

“In fact, for more than 15 years we have used our encapsulated glass transponders with FDA approved anti-migration caps and received no complaints regarding malignant tumors caused by our product.”

The FDA also stands by its approval of the technology.

Awareness questioned
Did the agency know of the tumor findings before approving the chip implants? The FDA declined repeated AP requests to specify what studies it reviewed.

The FDA is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, which, at the time of VeriChip’s approval, was headed by Tommy Thompson. Two weeks after the device’s approval was formally announced on Jan. 10, 2005, Thompson left his Cabinet post, and within five months was a board member of VeriChip Corp. and Applied Digital Solutions. He was compensated in cash and stock options.

Thompson, until recently a candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, says he had no personal relationship with the company as the VeriChip was being evaluated, nor did he play any role in FDA’s approval process of the RFID tag.

“I didn’t even know VeriChip before I stepped down from the Department of Health and Human Services,” he said in a telephone interview.


Also making no mention of the findings on animal tumors was a June report by the ethics committee of the American Medical Association, which touted the benefits of implantable RFID devices.

Had committee members reviewed the literature on cancer in chipped animals?

No, said Dr. Steven Stack, an AMA board member with knowledge of the committee’s review.

Was the AMA aware of the studies?

No, he said.

Published in veterinary and toxicology journals between 1996 and 2006, the studies found that lab mice and rats injected with microchips sometimes developed subcutaneous “sarcomas” — malignant tumors, most of them encasing the implants.

A 1998 study in Ridgefield, Conn., of 177 mice reported cancer incidence to be slightly higher than 10 percent — a result the researchers described as “surprising.”
A 2006 study in France detected tumors in 4.1 percent of 1,260 microchipped mice. This was one of six studies in which the scientists did not set out to find microchip-induced cancer but noticed the growths incidentally. They were testing compounds on behalf of chemical and pharmaceutical companies; but they ruled out the compounds as the tumors’ cause. Because researchers only noted the most obvious tumors, the French study said, “These incidences may therefore slightly underestimate the true occurrence” of cancer.
In 1997, a study in Germany found cancers in 1 percent of 4,279 chipped mice. The tumors “are clearly due to the implanted microchips,” the authors wrote.
Caveats accompanied the findings. “Blind leaps from the detection of tumors to the prediction of human health risk should be avoided,” one study cautioned. Also, because none of the studies had a control group of animals that did not get chips, the normal rate of tumors cannot be determined and compared to the rate with chips implanted.

Still, after reviewing the research, specialists at some pre-eminent cancer institutions said the findings raised red flags.

“There’s no way in the world, having read this information, that I would have one of those chips implanted in my skin, or in one of my family members,” said Dr. Robert Benezra, head of the Cancer Biology Genetics Program at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Before microchips are implanted on a large scale in humans, he said, testing should be done on larger animals, such as dogs or monkeys. “I mean, these are bad diseases. They are life-threatening. And given the preliminary animal data, it looks to me that there’s definitely cause for concern.”

Dr. George Demetri, director of the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, agreed. Even though the tumor incidences were “reasonably small,” in his view, the research underscored “certainly real risks” in RFID implants.

In humans, sarcomas, which strike connective tissues, can range from the highly curable to “tumors that are incredibly aggressive and can kill people in three to six months,” he said.

‘Some reason to be concerned’
At the Jackson Laboratory in Maine, a leader in mouse genetics research and the initiation of cancer, Dr. Oded Foreman, a forensic pathologist, also reviewed the studies at the AP’s request.

At first he was skeptical, suggesting that chemicals administered in some of the studies could have caused the cancers and skewed the results. But he took a different view after seeing that control mice, which received no chemicals, also developed the cancers. “That might be a little hint that something real is happening here,” he said. He, too, recommended further study, using mice, dogs or non-human primates.

Dr. Cheryl London, a veterinarian oncologist at Ohio State University, noted: “It’s much easier to cause cancer in mice than it is in people. So it may be that what you’re seeing in mice represents an exaggerated phenomenon of what may occur in people.”

Tens of thousands of dogs have been chipped, she said, and veterinary pathologists haven’t reported outbreaks of related sarcomas in the area of the neck, where canine implants are often done. (Published reports detailing malignant tumors in two chipped dogs turned up in AP’s four-month examination of research on chips and health. In one dog, the researchers said cancer appeared linked to the presence of the embedded chip; in the other, the cancer’s cause was uncertain.)

Nonetheless, London saw a need for a 20-year study of chipped canines “to see if you have a biological effect.” Dr. Chand Khanna, a veterinary oncologist at the National Cancer Institute, also backed such a study, saying current evidence “does suggest some reason to be concerned about tumor formations.”

Meanwhile, the animal study findings should be disclosed to anyone considering a chip implant, the cancer specialists agreed.

To date, however, that hasn’t happened.

The product that VeriChip Corp. won approval for use in humans is an electronic capsule the size of two grains of rice. Generally, it is implanted with a syringe into an anesthetized portion of the upper arm.

When prompted by an electromagnetic scanner, the chip transmits a unique code. With the code, hospital staff can go on the Internet and access a patient’s medical profile that is maintained in a database by VeriChip Corp. for an annual fee.

VeriChip Corp., whose parent company has been marketing radio tags for animals for more than a decade, sees an initial market of diabetics and people with heart conditions or Alzheimer’s disease, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The company is spending millions to assemble a national network of hospitals equipped to scan chipped patients.

But in its SEC filings, product labels and press releases, VeriChip Corp. has not mentioned the existence of research linking embedded transponders to tumors in test animals.

When the FDA approved the device, it noted some VeriChip risks: The capsules could migrate around the body, making them difficult to extract; they might interfere with defibrillators, or be incompatible with MRI scans, causing burns. While also warning that the chips could cause “adverse tissue reaction,” FDA made no reference to malignant growths in animal studies.

Did the agency review literature on microchip implants and animal cancer?

Dr. Katherine Albrecht, a privacy advocate and RFID expert, asked shortly after VeriChip’s approval what evidence the agency had reviewed. When FDA declined to provide information, she filed a Freedom of Information Act request. More than a year later, she received a letter stating there were no documents matching her request.

“The public relies on the FDA to evaluate all the data and make sure the devices it approves are safe,” she says, “but if they’re not doing that, who’s covering our backs?”


Protecting trade secrets
Late last year, Albrecht unearthed at the Harvard medical library three studies noting cancerous tumors in some chipped mice and rats, plus a reference in another study to a chipped dog with a tumor. She forwarded them to the AP, which subsequently found three additional mice studies with similar findings, plus another report of a chipped dog with a tumor.

Asked if it had taken these studies into account, the FDA said VeriChip documents were being kept confidential to protect trade secrets. After AP filed a FOIA request, the FDA made available for a phone interview Anthony Watson, who was in charge of the VeriChip approval process.

“At the time we reviewed this, I don’t remember seeing anything like that,” he said of animal studies linking microchips to cancer. A literature search “didn’t turn up anything that would be of concern.”

In general, Watson said, companies are expected to provide safety-and-effectiveness data during the approval process, “even if it’s adverse information.”


Watson added: “The few articles from the literature that did discuss adverse tissue reactions similar to those in the articles you provided, describe the responses as foreign body reactions that are typical of other implantable devices. The balance of the data provided in the submission supported approval of the device.”

Another implantable device could be a pacemaker, and indeed, tumors have in some cases attached to foreign bodies inside humans. But Dr. Neil Lipman, director of the Research Animal Resource Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, said it’s not the same. The microchip isn’t like a pacemaker that’s vital to keeping someone alive, he added, “so at this stage, the payoff doesn’t justify the risks.”

Silverman, VeriChip Corp.’s chief executive, disagreed. “Each month pet microchips reunite over 8,000 dogs and cats with their owners,” he said. “We believe the VeriMed Patient Identification System will provide similar positive benefits for at-risk patients who are unable to communicate for themselves in an emergency.”


And what of former HHS secretary Thompson?

When asked what role, if any, he played in VeriChip’s approval, Thompson replied: “I had nothing to do with it. And if you look back at my record, you will find that there has never been any improprieties whatsoever.”

FDA’s Watson said: “I have no recollection of him being involved in it at all.” VeriChip Corp. declined comment.

Thompson vigorously campaigned for electronic medical records and healthcare technology both as governor of Wisconsin and at HHS. While in President Bush’s Cabinet, he formed a “medical innovation” task force that worked to partner FDA with companies developing medical information technologies.

At a “Medical Innovation Summit” on Oct. 20, 2004, Lester Crawford, the FDA’s acting commissioner, thanked the secretary for getting the agency “deeply involved in the use of new information technology to help prevent medication error.” One notable example he cited: “the implantable chips and scanners of the VeriChip system our agency approved last week.”

After leaving the Cabinet and joining the company board, Thompson received options on 166,667 shares of VeriChip Corp. stock, and options on an additional 100,000 shares of stock from its parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, according to SEC records. He also received $40,000 in cash in 2005 and again in 2006, the filings show.

The Project on Government Oversight called Thompson’s actions “unacceptable” even though they did not violate what the independent watchdog group calls weak conflict-of-interest laws.

“A decade ago, people would be embarrassed to cash in on their government connections. But now it’s like the Wild West,” said the group’s executive director, Danielle Brian.

Thompson is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, a Washington law firm that was paid $1.2 million for legal services it provided the chip maker in 2005 and 2006, according to SEC filings.

He stepped down as a VeriChip Corp. director in March to seek the GOP presidential nomination, and records show that the company gave his campaign $7,400 before he bowed out of the race in August.


In a TV interview while still on the board, Thompson was explaining the benefits — and the ease — of being chipped when an interviewer interrupted:

“I’m sorry, sir. Did you just say you would get one implanted in your arm?”

“Absolutely,” Thompson replied. “Without a doubt.”

“No concerns at all?”

“No.”

But to date, Thompson has yet to be chipped himself.

VeriChip: RFID Microchip Implants for Humans

First it was cattle. Then it was pets. Now it's Mexicans.

Will Americans be next?

In Mexico, implantable and trackable micro-chips for humans, which can be used to store personal information, like medical, military, criminal and credit history, have been introduced by Applied Digital Solutions of Palm Beach, Florida.

Its brand name is Verichip, and it's a tiny microchip the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the skin.

In Mexico, which is suffering an epidemic of kidnappings for ransom, the device may be touted as "LoJack for People."

After the chip is implanted, government and hospital officials use a
scanning device to download a serial number to access the name, ID and personal history of the individual on their computer.

Applied Digital Solutions, which produces the controversial "Digital Angel" tracking device, as well as the "Verichip," also claims it is developing technology to use satellites to track people.

For government officials, the implications are obvious.
Anyone designated as a so-called "terrorist" can be tracked wherever they go with an implanted microchip.

In fact, eventually an entire micro-chipped population can be more easily tracked, managed and controlled by any government to make sure it’s compliant to the State's will.

In its report, CNN blithely (and falsely) states that "while the idea of using the chip to track people has raised privacy concerns in the United States, the idea has been popular with Mexicans."

This implies that Mexicans don't care about privacy, and will even stand in line just to get their microchip implants, as long as they will be allowed to move to the United States.

The CNN story also falsely implies that Mexicans will pay the $150 cost for the microchip injection plus the $50 annual fee for the "privilege" of being tracked like cattle.

That's probably on every Mexican's top priority list -- right after getting his or her daily burrito.

The IT Government market for Applied Digital Solutions, however, appears to be wide open, since the scanning device and related software cost $1,200.

The downside to the technology? Currently VeriChip can confirm a kidnap victim's identity -- only after the body is found.

YOUR FUTURE I.D. IS UNDER YOUR SKIN

According to the press release, "VeriChip is a secure, subdermal, radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip about the size of a grain of rice that can be used in a variety of security, financial, emergency identification and other applications."

This matter-of-fact description of the device is sure to alarm Christians, since it may be identified as the proverbial Mark of the Beast from Revelations, without which “no man might buy or sell save he that had the Mark.”

"In October 2002, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that VeriChip is not a regulated device with regard to its security, financial, personal identification/safety applications,” the press release contionues, “but that VeriChip's healthcare information applications are subject to regulation by the FDA in the United States."

Let's see if the FDA ruling can be deciphered. It's OK if the VeriChip tracks your credit report history, but not OK if it's used to inform doctors you're diabetic? This will undoubtedly be used as an argument to justify the VeriChip as a so-called "medical device" in the future.

The live "chipping" event in Mexico was billed as a "simple, outpatient procedure that requires only a few minutes for a local anesthetic and insertion of the chip with a specially designed needle."

This could actually be the start of a brand new low-cost underground industry. First there were back alley abortions. Then punk garage bands. Can basement microchip insertions be far behind?

HAPPY CHIPPED MEXICANS LOVE THEIR NEW SLAVERY

Even testimonials by satisfied customers were used to promote the “chipping” event by Applied Digital Solutions in Mexico.

For example, according to the VeriChip press release, Manuel Rosillo says, "I used to lead a normal, active life, but I never imagined I'd have a health problem as serious as this at my age. So far, I've suffered two heart attacks. I've undergone heart surgery and I'm under permanent treatment and medical supervision, which makes VeriChip an extremely useful product for me."

In other words, doctors at the hospital could monitor Senor Rosillo, while he was having another heart attack -- and dying at a remote location.

Another VeriChip testimonial comes from Francisco Pujano who says, "I was extremely interested in having a VeriChip implant after suffering a cerebral aneurysm. When I have an attack, I don't remember where I am or understand what's happening around me, and it can sometimes last for a long time, so for safety reasons, I opted for VeriChip."

Imagine how this could have helped George Bush -- while he was choking on that Enron Pretzel a while back.

FROM RFID'S TO NATIONAL I.D. CARD IMPLANTS

So how do RFIDs work?

Patented in 1973, Radio Frequency Identification tags (RFIDs) are very small (11 mm) microchips, which act as transponders (a combination of transmitter and responder), which are always listening for a radio signal sent by the transceivers, or RFID readers.

When a transponder receives a radio query, it transmits its unique ID code back to the transceiver.

RFID tags are already in use in the United States, including ID chips for cats and dogs, EZPass for highway tollbooths, and gas cards like ExxonMobil's SpeedPass.

Government officials have discussed putting RFID tags on all vital documents -- paper money, passports, drivers' licenses, passports, stock certificates, university diplomas, medical degrees/ licenses, birth certificates, and so on. In other words, these are the documents necessary for daily life in a "civilized" society.

With implantable microchips containing this information, external microchips (RFIDs) will be a moot point.

A National ID Card-Chip is the logical extension of this technology.

Currently the VeriChip, an RFID microchip tag, has been sold as a way to keep track of errant pets, wandering children and mindless Alzheimers patients.

Future potential uses are, however, much more sinister. For example, delegates to the Chinese Communist Party Congress were required to wear RFID-chipped badges, so their movements could be tracked and recorded. The Chinese correctly assumed that this procedure will cut down on defections to the West.

The next step is also obvious. Who needs a badge when you require your delegates -- or your employees -- or your citizens -- to have a microchip ID implanted in their arms?

Applied Digital Solutions Chairman/ CEO Scott R. Silverman must be salivating at the Global Slave Labor Market with its billions and billions of potential microchip implantees.

NEW IMPROVED IMPERIAL I.D.

It's not difficult to imagine a future which degenerates into a nightmare world where all transactions are tracked and stored on a global basis. The microchip implant makes 24/7 ubiquitous surveillance of any individual a sobering reality.

Today you can crush, puncture or microwave the RFID tag in the jeans you bought at Walmart -- but you can't demagnetize it.

If your ID is under your skin, the only way to get rid of it is to dig it out with an Exacto blade -- a science fiction scenario which is about to become very real.

Of course, this will also bring about a black market of phoney chips and reprogrammed IDs.

While the Roman Empire had tesserae (ID tags) for its slaves, the New American Empire will require more sophisticated devices to keep track of their "citizens."

Since Global High Tech Feudalism is the political-economic model of the future, implantable ID chips will be inevitably marketed to young people as being "cool" -- like the fad for body piercing and tattoos.

VeriChip's own cutesy advertising tagline is "Get Chipped," as in "Hey Mom, can I get chipped?"

The Human MicroChip Implant Scam is here and now. It is the latest affront to human liberty and dignity, disguised as a "simple" means for more "security" and more "comfort."

Rest assured, however, that a new generation of hackers are already working on ways to subvert this technology.

FDA clears RFID chip for humans

18-Oct-2004 - The US Food and Drug Administration this week approved the first implantable radiofrequency identification microchip for human use, elevating RFID from a tool for supply chain management into an enabling technology for improving healthcare delivery to patients.

The approval comes after a period of scrutiny at the FDA, started in July, in which the agency has looked into any privacy and patient confidentiality issues that could arise from the technology.
One implanted in a patient's skin, the RFID tag would allow doctors to scan patients and, for example, ensure that they receive the proper treatment. The unique ID could be linked to a number of data points including a patient's complete medical history and any history of allergies, drug interactions, etc.

VeriChip technology is already widely used for the tagging of pets, and to track livestock, so is well established as an 'in vivo' technology. The Italian Ministry of Health kicked off a six-month trial of the chips for hospitals in April.

The 11 millimetre RFID chips could save lives and possibly limit injuries from errors in medical treatments, claims VeriChip, the company behind the development. VeriChip - a subsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions - revealed details of the approval last week during a conference call with investors.

VeriChip believes that the technology could also be used to monitor other implantable devices, such as a pacemaker. It will not hold any data itself apart from a 16 digit number, but this could be linked to a database containing any amount of patient information.

The company plans to market the chip for $125 (not including implantation). It is anticipated that the chip would be inserted in the rear part of the triceps of the right arm under the skin

Meanwhile, the technology is finding some surprising applications outside of the healthcare arena. For example, in Mexico staff in the attorney general's office have received implanted chips from VeriChip that are used to control access to rooms and documents related to the country's efforts to combat drug cartels.

VeriChip is also working on an implant that will contain Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities. Such a device would allow an individual with a scanner to pinpoint someone's position anywhere around the world.

FDA approves implanted RFID chip for humans

In the category of unbelievably bad ideas that we all knew were making their way toward reality whether we like it or not comes the news the FDA has just approved VeriChip's implantable RFID chips for use in humans. These are the same chips that we're currently using to identify our pets. VeriChip is touting the chips' medical applications, as a way of potentially saving lives by storing medical data.

Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code — similar to the identifying UPC code on products sold in retail stores — that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over the chip. At the doctor's office those codes stamped onto chips, once scanned, would reveal such information as a patient's allergies and prior treatments.

The FDA in October 2002 said that the agency would regulate health care applications possible through VeriChip. Meanwhile, the chip has been used for a number of security-related tasks as well as for pure whimsy: Club hoppers in Barcelona, Spain, now use the microchip much like a smartcard to speed drink orders and payment.

In case it's not immediately obvious to you why you wouldn't want to walk around in public broadcasting your financial and/or medical information to anyone with an RFID reader, Bruce Schneier spells it all out for you in a great post on the Bush administration's plans to push for RFID-based passports. Here's a nice chunk of it, but you should read the whole thing.

These chips are like smart cards, but they can be read from a distance. A receiving device can "talk" to the chip remotely, without any need for physical contact, and get whatever information is on it. Passport officials envision being able to download the information on the chip simply by bringing it within a few centimeters of an electronic reader.

Unfortunately, RFID chips can be read by any reader, not just the ones at passport control. The upshot of this is that travelers carrying around RFID passports are broadcasting their identity.

Think about what that means for a minute. It means that passport holders are continuously broadcasting their name, nationality, age, address and whatever else is on the RFID chip. It means that anyone with a reader can learn that information, without the passport holder's knowledge or consent. It means that pickpockets, kidnappers and terrorists can easily--and surreptitiously--pick Americans or nationals of other participating countries out of a crowd.

It is a clear threat to both privacy and personal safety, and quite simply, that is why it is bad idea. Proponents of the system claim that the chips can be read only from within a distance of a few centimeters, so there is no potential for abuse. This is a spectacularly naive claim. All wireless protocols can work at much longer ranges than specified. In tests, RFID chips have been read by receivers 20 meters away. Improvements in technology are inevitable.

Do you really want to walk in and apply for a job knowing that you're broadcasting details about a heart condition/HIV infection/cancer history/etc. to everyone within 20 meters, including the people who are considering whether or not to hire you and pay your medical insurance and sick leave? Do you really want to walk down a crowded street broadcasting financial data of any kind to God knows who? Is it really a good idea to broadcast personal identification information to anyone and everyone, when identity theft is one of the country's fastest growing crimes?

All "Mark of the Beast"-type stuff aside, this makes about zero sense from a security and privacy perspective. You can make all the tinfoil hat jokes you like, but I'm with Bruce Schneier in concluding that the only use for this technology that makes real sense is what Wal-Mart wants to use it for by putting it on their products, namely surveillance and tracking. (Of course, in Wal-Mart's case, they're obviously tracking inventory and not people... so far.)
