Living in Alaska can some times be like living on Mars

Only in Alaska can you be out shopping and get to the store only to find it is closed and realize that it is in fact 10pm even though the sun is still high in the sky! We are getting a little over 15 hours of daylight now and it is only April! We have "day sleeper curtains" on our bedroom windows so sleeping isn't an issue but keeping track of the time seems to be. One of my coworkers told me that last week her husband was doing some home repair and she had to go out side to tell him to stop pounding on the rain gutters as it was 3 am! The flowers and plants are blooming great due to all of this sun and I am really looking forward to my walks with Lilith now! The worst it was in winter, we had semi darkness (think extended dusk) starting at 4:30 pm and grey morning skies till about 10 am. I didn't think it was too bad. I guess I had been so worried about surviving the winter that I never even considered the summer sun! We are looking into taking a train trip to the interior of Alaska soon. see available tours here! They give special "Alaska resident" discounts on most touristy type things here including the glacier and whale cruises which we also hope to do this summer. Looks like with all of the "extra" hours in the day, we will have plenty of time to do them! Ha Ha! another Alaska vacation planner here! Here is another website specializing in Alaska cruises. Holland America handles most of the cruises out of Seattle and has many larger ships that service the Alaska coast (they also offer land and cruise packages where they partner with the Alaska railroad) but if you are looking for something a little less "showboat", you can always take a small charter boat once you are actually in Alaska and get really up close to the sea life. There are tour offices all over downtown Anchorage selling these tour packages. They are often featured in the newspaper too. Usually you can get a half day or whole day cruise for under $100 per adult and throw in an all you can eat dinner for only $15.00 more.
