Eat This Not That!

I loved this book as it was pretty visually stimulating. Meaning it had lots of pictures. Maybe this is because I have read far to many "Nutrition" books for my degree or because I have been reading too many visually stimulating books to my daughter lately and my brain is spoiled. It has lots of interesting facts about nutrients and lesser known "hidden" evils in food marked as healthy. We all know that eating a double Whopper with cheese isn't smart or healthy but did you know some Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine dinners have twice the fat of a regular Stouffer's entree? Or that some of Ben and Jerry's low fat frozen yogurt flavors use liquid sugar, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup to cut back on the fat?
This book not only compares fat grams, sugar grams, calories, but it also compares salt grams of each item. Even the most jaded of us will be appalled at the amount of sodium in items marked to our children!
There is even a section showing fake menus from different styles of restaurants (think ethnic or specialty) telling you what is the worst thing to order and what are the best. (some in between options are given too) Then there is the fast food section giving you a big photo on one page of the best meal possible from that establishment with a list of three alternate options below and on the opposite page, the worst meal possible and three almost as bad options. For example, Subway; 6-inch double roast beef sub vs. 6-inch tuna sub or Starbucks; black forest ham, egg, and cheddar breakfast sandwich with a Grande sugar free Nonfat vanilla Latte (510 calories 16 gm fat, 21 gm sugar) vs. bran muffin with nuts and a Grande 2% white Chocolate Mocha (890 calories, 37gm fat (14gm saturated), 82 gms sugar!).
There is even a token section on what to eat when; you want to look and feel younger (sunflower seeds, red wine and grape juice, spinach and beans, sweet potatoes, and coffee), when you are hung over (orange juice, cold water or gatorade, toast with preserves or berries), ETC. It is a very easy read filled with lots of useful information packed i a fun and easy to digest volume!
