Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 for Wii
Let me start this review by saying what high hopes I had for this game and how very much I wanted to like it. Even after reading some pretty horrible reviews of it, read them for yourself here!
I still purchased it, hoping they were wrong. Well, they weren't. This game has the potential to be a great game with fun and challenging workouts, if it actually worked!
You are very limited in personalizing your character which doesn't surprise me as it seems like they put very little time or effort into making the animated characters work the way they are suppose to anyway. Unlike the Mii, changing your height or weight had no effect on the computer generated character.
Unlike many of the reviews I read, I didn't mind the music selections too much, I was too busy trying to figure out how to get my animated character to sense my movements which in some of the activities it never did. That bothered me almost as much as the fact that Jillian still praises you even though your character has been standing there motionless for the whole duration of the exercise. Not too rewarding if you ask me.
Let me tell you, I did everything but stand on my head trying to get it to register my movements on the boxing and the tire trail. What is worse is this game has a little balance board in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that has a green dot on each half of it and it shows your movements on the balance board by the green dots being present or not. This was working perfectly even though my character was standing stone still, the green dots were corresponding in time to my steps. It also has an endurance bar on the bottom left hand side of the screen and even when it was fully green (meaning I was swinging my arms like crazy), my avatar stood completely still. Some of the activites required over exaggerated moves, that can't be entirely safe, in order to get the avatar to register them. Not very encouraging at all.
This game unlocks fitness, diet, and training tips by putting in time working out. The tips are pretty generic however. Again, not much motivation.
On the custom workout section you have a choice of;
paint grenade toss, cannon attack, handcar pump, tire trail (never got it to work properly), rowing, monkey bars (after I over exaggerated my hand movements and twists it finally worked..oh and the game tells you not to do this?!?!), log jump, log walk (I leaned way over to each side with no effect on my character..it's basically just walking in place even if you are standing still?!?), boxing (couldn't get my character to move at all), punching bag dodge(be prepared to get knocked down a lot! it only sensed one of my movements no matter how hard I tried!), and running.
You can view your progress on the game (weight loss and caloric burn) on a weekly, monthly, or yearly graph but you have to wonder just how accurate it is since it doesn't register your movements half of the time and you have to have worked out already that day in order to retrieve them!
It has a multiplayer option but doesn't use the balance board for it.
You can choose from weight loss, intervals, strength training, or hill climb. You can also choose the length of your training from 5-60 minutes and intensity from light, medium, or hard. It also asks your controller configuration (right handed or left handed). You can use this game with or without the balance board and with two contollers, or one controller with a nunchuk attachment.
I have to say I don't recommend it unless you like paying to feel like banging your head against a brick wall trying to make it work correctly! I personally don't have the patience or the perseverance to keep trying and trying to get the game to respond although in theory it gave me a good workout trying but it didn't help my mood or attitude. If you only did the jogging in place and the few other activites that actually respond, maybe I could see getting it but don't you expect to be able to play the whole game not just parts of it?
I also must have looked pretty silly kicking, swinging my arms, and punching so furiously and cursing under my breath (all the while my animated character just stood there seemingly mocking me). If that sounds like fun or you just want to open your drapes and give your neighbors a laugh, by all means get this game, otherwise save your money.If you still want to give it a try, you can buy it here!
